The Supervisory Dental Assistant is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of dental assistants. The incumbent may be delegated full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the dental assisting activities for the dental service. THIS VACANCY IS OPEN TO CURRENT PERMANENT EMPLOYEES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS NATIONWIDE ONLY. The incumbent will have full supervisory responsibility of all lead dental assistants, dental assistants the Orlando VAHCS and oversight of the dental assistants in the 3 outpatient clinics - Daytona Beach Outpatient Clinic, Viera Outpatient Clinic and Lake Baldwin Outpatient Clinic. They will be able to perform complex work in all dental specialties without supervision. Advanced knowledge of OSHA standards required and above average and full knowledge of all aspects of dental assisting is required. This assignment will include advanced understanding and use of computers and computerized record system. Dental assistants at this level serve in supervisory dental assistant position within corporate Orlando VAHCS. The supervisory dental assistant is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of lead dentist and dental assistants. The incumbent may be delegated full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the dental assisting activities for the dental service. Typical duties include, but not limited to: Administrative Responsibility: Creates and execute protocols to manage and supervise a team of dental assistants. Active in policy development with approval from the Service Chief. Create work schedules to distribute and balance the workload among dental assistants. Plan and adjust work operations based on analysis of situations that arise. Create workload analysis reports for the Dental Service Chief. These reports can include but not limited to: accomplishments, time expended, performance goals, progress assessment towards those goals, organizational and operational challenges and proposed solutions. Lead the team in: identifying, distributing and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established work flow. Serve as the supervisory dental assistant liaison for Corporate Orlando outpatient clinics - Daytona Beach OPC, Viera OPC and Lake Baldwin OPC Dental Services. Clerical Functions: Assist HAS with patient scheduling. Timekeeping responsibility. TMS coordinator. Coordinate leave schedule of the dental assistants and other staff as needed. Schedule mandatory training classes for all staff. Computer Skills: Must possess advance computer skills and demonstrate advanced competency level with Microsoft office . Must be able to train other staff members as needed in computer related areas. Advance use of the computerized dental patient records system to include initiating patient consults, storing and viewing images, entry of diagnostic data, setting up for treatment planning and presentation to the patient. Customer Service: Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude for patients, co-workers and the public. Provides assistance to customers with questions or concerns, provides service recovery. Chairside Assisting: Extreme familiarity and full competency in all specialized dental procedures including: Oral maxillofacial surgery, implantology, periodontics, prosthodontics, and operating room dental assisting. Sets up operatory and/or surgery suite for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit for timely turnover. Dental Imaging: Images are characterized by diagnostic quality, accurately oriented and exposed. Dental imaging safety techniques are utilized, and retakes are minimized. Imaging requests are accomplished within the desired time frame. Infection Control and Equipment Sterilization: Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning up operatories. Instruments are properly prepared for sterilization by SPD standards. Instruments are prepared in a manner that does not delay clinical care. Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in exposing images. Information Management: Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information. Follows computer security regulations. Patient Safety: Modifies care as necessitated by patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position). Provides accurate and understandable instructions to patients. Participates in patient identification and time out per JCAHO requirements Monitors patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress. Monitors patient (BP, pulse EKG, pulse oximeter), and condition during moderate sedation and during recovery period following procedure.
