The incumbent assists the Dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision. Major duties include but are not limited to: Assist in routine general dental procedures. Assist in specialized dental procedures, such as periodontics and prosthodontics. Must be proficient in dental imaging. Images are characterized by diagnostic quality, accurately oriented and exposed. Operate dental X-ray equipment to take intra and extra-oral radiographs. Take preliminary impressions for study models, remove sutures, place and remove rubber dams, perio-packs, matrix bands, and wedges. Instruct patient in proper dental techniques, care of appliances, and causes of dental decay. Chart examination and treatment information as relayed by dentist to patient records. Possess professional customer service skills; always show courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude for patients, coworkers and the public. Keep operative field clear of debris and retract oral tissues effectively and comfortably. Prepare dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions. Complete all intraoperative procedures within standard infection control protocols. Provide post-operative and other appropriate patient education. Perform other permissible direct patient care issues as time and skill levels allow. Properly prepare instruments for sterilization by SPD standards and in a manner that does not delay clinical care. At all times demonstrate proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning up operatories. Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) Qualification.
