The Lead Dental Assistant position is responsible for performing the duties of a dental assistant in a hospital-based dental clinic at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The incumbent serves as a staff dental assistant at the full performance level for routine patient care and performs a full range of duties with indirect supervision from the treating dentist and dental supervisors. Performs assigned selected procedures with some independence. Duties include but not limited to: Customer Service Interactions with management, co-workers, patients, and the general public are consistently courteous, respectful, and cooperative in nature. Employee will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work with others to implement the organization's mission and goals. Employee will ensure productivity is maintained to support the needs of the service Chairside Assistant Incumbent is responsible for setting up the operatory for the planned procedure and cleans dental unit for timely turnover. Properly lays out all instruments and materials needed for each procedure and prepares the patient and operatory for said procedures, strictly adhering to all pertinent infection control policies and procedures. Assists providers in routine general dental procedures using concepts of four-handed dentistry. Assists providers in specialized dental procedures, such as oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, implant placement and restoration. Passes instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently. Keeps operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues effectively and comfortably. Prepares dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions. Accomplishes all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols. Clinical Support Properly stores and maintains adequate levels of supplies in assigned rooms and operatories. If at any time the incumbent notices any supplies running low in the supply room, he/she immediately notifies the responsible person so that supplies can be reordered. Ensures instruments and unapproved items are not left in operatory during non-patient care hours. Ensures medicaments are properly secured during and following patient care. Monitors expiration dates of all supplies, medications, and instruments throughout assigned areas. Performs Environment of Care Rounds for dental service to ensure all areas of the service are neat, functional, and within operational standards; places appropriate work orders to correct deficiencies and follows up to ensure resolution. Reviews daily clinical schedules in advance to fully prepare and identify veterans due for routine and/or preventative care to maintain optimal oral health and meet National Dental Quality Indicators. Facilitates teamwork to accommodate emergency patients, stat consults, and multiple appointments. Makes every effort to accommodate veteran appointments. Assists in filling providers' schedules due to late cancellations and failed appointments. May be required to maintain a variety of reports relating to Dental Service activities. Knowledgeable of front office processes; schedules appointments for veterans using established business rules. Responsible for tracking lab cases for assigned dentist. When assigned to assist periodontal specialist, incumbent is responsible for timely and proper handling of biologic and non-biologic materials and entering information upon receipt and usage into TrackCore and Dental Share Drive for purpose of tracking and supply monitoring. Incumbent regularly reviews stock of biologic and non-biologic supplies to ensure specialist has appropriate stock to accomplish scheduled treatment. Workplace/Employee Safety and Infection Control Keeps clinical spaces, work areas, computer areas, and shared common areas neat, organized, and free of clutter. Demonstrates proper infection control procedure sin setting up and cleaning operatories and all aspects of patient care. Properly disinfects oral appliances to prevent cross contamination. Maintains both routine and specialty dental equipment per manufacturer instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Follows all SOPs for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). Employee performs duties using safe ergonomic work practices. Wears radiation monitoring badge. Lead Duties Demonstrates advanced knowledge of dental assisting across multiple areas of practice by managing equipment, supply, data tracking, and inventory for placement and restoration of biologic and non-biologic implantable devices and supporting parts. Provides guidance and training to staff dental assistants, students, and/or trainees. Knowledgeable in operating and maintaining dental laboratory equipment. Provides instruction in maintenance of all dental service equipment. Coordinates clinical work flow and assignments. Provides primary support to the Chief for daily delivery of dental laboratory services and liaises with other dental employees to coordinate patients' care plans to reduce redundancies and delay in patient treatment for lab and dental implantable services.
